EU citizens
The terms and conditions under which EU citizens of states, which are parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, citizens of Switzerland and their family members can enter, stay and depart the Republic of Bulgaria are regulated by the Law on the Entry, Stay and Departure of the Republic of Bulgaria of European Union citizens and their family members.
EU citizen may enter and leave the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria with a valid ID card or valid passport.
EU citizens and their family members do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria.
The Republic of Bulgaria applies the common visa policy of the European Union under the terms of the Treaty of Accession from January 1st, 2007.
Since January 25th, 2012 Bulgaria has been unilaterally applying a visa-free regime to holders of valid Schengen visas until the date of its full accession to the Schengen Area.
For a short stay in Bulgaria, for up to three months, EU citizens and their family members need only a valid ID card or a valid passport.
For a long-term stay in the Republic of Bulgaria, up to five years, or for a permanent residence EU citizens and their family members are obliged to apply for a certificate of residence within three months from the date of entry. The application should be submitted to the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Bulgaria.
